As it stands, I am currently on quite a few blogging networks. Most of those accounts were made so I can leave comments for other bloggers, while other accounts I made because I just felt like making them. I don’t spend too much time on the blogging network because I have my own site that I blog on.
My first blogging account that I made was with Bloggers. When I first started blogging, I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to do. I wasn’t even sure if I was blogging right. But as the days go by, I start to understand what blogging was.
Blogging to me is pretty much anything you want it to be. Some bloggers write on a certain topic but not me. I write about anything that comes to mind. I don’t have a specific topic that I write on because I think that if I limit myself to one topic, I will eventually run out of things to talk about. If I keep my topics open, I can write about anything that I want.
Bloggers was a great way for me to start blogging but it lacked something. I wasn’t able to do the things I wanted to do with Bloggers. Their back end was easy enough to use and the customizing of the templates was great but I wanted something that would meet my needs and express what I wanted to say.
After a while, I left the Blogger account alone and moved on to posting blogs on my own site. I create a very simple back end that would allow me to post my entries. I created a front end that would read from the database. Set out with the tools that I had, I was satisfied with my results.
But then I got bored because my blog wasn’t reaching anywhere. That’s when I started thinking about the blog network again. When I was with Blogger, there were others on Blogger as well. They got their exposure because Blogger would update their front page showing which blog was recently updated. People in that network would go around reading other people’s blog and slowly their page got the exposure. No one but my friends and family knew about my page so I went back and joined a few more blog network to get the exposure that I was looking for.
I signed up with Xanga and joined the metro group of bloggers who were in the same city as I was. But even being in that group, I wasn’t getting much traffic. Eventually, I gave up on the traffic and just concentrated on write content for my family and friends to read.
After having played around with my own blogging back end, I decided that I needed something more powerful. At the time, I didn’t know about WordPress. I thought WordPress was just like Blogger and Xanga. I didn’t know that you could download a file and set up your own WordPress. When I found out that it was possible to do that, I jumped on the opportunity and started playing around.
WordPress was exactly what I was looking for. It gave me the flexibility I was looking for. Customizing the theme wasn’t all that hard either. I’ve been using WordPress as my back end for quite some time now and I love it. The only reason why I registered for an account here was to get an API key for Askimet. I was doing a pretty good job at keeping spam out of my comment area but I think with the help of Askimet, that job is going to be easier.
